Hazzina Bint Kray
AHSB XVII
Chesnut Mare born 29 April 1995. 15 hands 3"
By Chatanz out of Kray Mohammadia. Bred by Jenny Lees and retained by the stud
Hazzina Bint Kray will join our band of brood mares in 2006. Hazzina has taken part in Arab racing, which she did half heartedly, surprising us (and I suspect herself) by winning a race at Lingfield. She then tackled some Endurance rides, which she really enjoyed despite having to carry me. I delivered Hazzina, she was Kray Mohammedia’s first foal and she has grown up into a kind, responsive mare with a real sense of humour - as you will see from the photos on this page. I would like her to have a foal before she gets much older so I will cover her with Bahraini stallion Krayaan Dilmun in 2006.
I must check with my Arab friends before naming this foal if and when it arrives.................when I named Hazzina I used my knowledge of my own mother’s language, which is Maltese. Maltese is roughly 75% Old Arabic. In Maltese Hazzina means "naughty/cheeky girl", very appropriate I thought for the brave little filly that was Kray Mohammedia’s firstborn. I was only aware that something was amiss when my first Arab visitor of the summer arrived and there was a stunned silence when I introduced "Hazzina". Somewhere between the Arabs invading Malta and leaving behind their language and today’s modern Arabic something changed. How can I put this delicately, it seems that "Hazzina" should be charging Krayaan Dilmun for her services and not vice versa!
